My Media Consumption
So I thought I’d play apart in the latest tech meme about how us web junkies consume our media. I originally read the post from Jeremiah on his blog so I thought I’d join the party.
My Media Consumption Diet (most used at top, least used at bottom):
Web: I get easily 95% of my news from the Web. I use Newsfire to get through all my feeds. News, Work-related, Sports, Fun stuff, it’s all there. I try to find feeds from multiple viewpoints and sometimes feeds that have to do with nothing that I do but often relate in some ways. Try to keep things fresh.
TV: Due to my DVR through DirecTV I’m a fairly big TV junkie. My wife and I watch have our shows we watch every week like 24, Prison Break, American Idol, Grey’s Anatomy (yes, guilty) and starting to watch The Daily Show and Chappelle Show before I go to bed. I’m also a English Premiership fan too. A while back I went without TV for 30 days fairly easily and starting to think I need to do try that again. If I just stuck to my recorded shows.
Communication: I have email setup on my laptop and on my Blackjack so it’s never too far away. I also can IM on both my laptop and cell phone but rarely use it on the latter. I’m a frequent Twitter-er (via IM) and we use Campfire quite often to chat for work purposes.
Movies: We haven’t been able to catch many movies recently but did actually make time to see one this weekend, Breach. It was an ok movie, a dark movie, but to be expected. We have Netflix and have recently signed up for Blockbuster online to see which we like better. (I like the idea of returning to the store if you want to) Now with an 8 month old we spend watch more movies at home than going to the theatre. Fine by us.
Music:I listen to everything musical either off ITunes on my laptop or my Ipod. I do scrobble with Last.fm which I love. Sometimes I’ll listen to music all week long and sometimes I won’t even open ITunes. I’ve also noticed that my podcast listening has been going down. Seems like I get the info I need from my feeds and the podcasts often regurgitate that.
Books: You can see my current readings in the footer of the page. I’ve had kind of a revival of sorts with my book reading. I never used to read but have found it to be quite relaxing and I find it a great place to brainstorm (I keep my Moleskine close by). I’ve been reading a lot of web/tech related books recently but like to mix it up because it is always interesting to me where you will find inspiration.
UPDATE! Games: Robert asked me in the comments about games and I totally missed that one. Yes I play games, but not near like I used to. The only thing I really play these days is WoW, Call of Duty 2, and some Command & Conquer : Generals (the last one is for work, we needed to find a game we could all play together but on less-than-game-optimal laptops, its fun.)
Magazines: I do have subscriptions to Men’s Health and Men’s Fitness but hardly even have time to read them. They make good reads for long trips or plane rides but other than that, I don’t usually get to them. Too many ads!
Newspaper: Only way I even see a newspaper is when I go to my in-laws and my father-in-law is a subscriber of the NYTimes. Side note: I think NYTimes.com is by far the best online representation of a old-school newspaper I’ve seen. It takes all the plus of paper and adds the benefits of the online space.
I’m not going to pass this on to 5 others because that comes off as too chain-letter to me and I never liked those in grade school, why start now.
