My latest gadget - The Pulse Smartpen

I’ve always struggled with the ability to capture a moment, a college class, a presentation, a meeting. There is often no pattern, reasoning, or order behind note-taking abilities. Mind mapping, bullet points, verbatim, argh! Anyway, point being, I have always had a hard time trying to find just the right way to take notes. By paper, iPhone, or Laptop.

Paper was always tops for flexibility but not very searchable or sharable. So I conformed to the computer and the closest thing I could find was Evernote. Unstructured text documents and it required the keyboard be used despite my need for more of a ‘mind mapping’ process. But recently, I think I may have found the holy grail (at least for me). It’s called the Pulse SmartPen made by Livescribe. It’s part pen/microphone/camera/storage device that allows it all to come together for me. Watch my demo/review of what I’m talking about but all I can say for now is so far, so good.

Oh, and for those interested in the church sermon and sketchnotes I did today, see below.

How to prepare for an online webinar/demo

Had a few people ask how to do a good online demonstration when showing your product off. I’m not talking presentation skills but more the technical details to have it feel and look clean. I told them I’d put together a quick little screencast showing my setup, in a Mac world, on how to do it. So here’s what I do, nothing super complicated but small steps add up to alot!

VIDEO: Using iTunes + Home Sharing to sync music across multiple machines

I posted a tweet a couple of weeks ago trying to figure out the best to consolidate our music libraries onto one machine and share across all our laptops so we don’t have to keep big copies on everyone’s machines.  So after many hours of work this is the best solution I came up with today but it’s pretty close and it’s mainly thanks to iTunes 9 and the ‘Home Sharing’ feature to get it all to work.  Please let me know if you have questions or better ideas! Thanks.

5 things the Kindle could do better

kindle

Full Disclaimer:
I love my Kindle.  Got the Kindle 2 when it was announced and there is not a question that it has increased the reading that I do.  I use it probably 40% of the time in ‘text-to-speech’ mode while driving.  I have purchased about 25 items since getting it and keep it pretty chalked full of samples for future purchases.

Now, with that out of the way, I wanted to talk about how the Kindle could be even better.  Some of the things that they don’t allow a reader to do is silly and not very intuitive in places.  This is less about the user experience of the Kindle and more about the system/services around it.

1) My Clippings - I read a fair amount of business & self-help books and so I use the highlight and annotate functions of the Kindle quite a bit.  The downside is when you pull these off of the Kindle they are all merged together and don’t have a lot of rhyme or reason to it.  I even struggle figuring out which note was to which book (I tend to read 2 or 3 books at one time).

2) Kindle iPhone app doesn’t allow highlight or annotate - I was in church today with my Kindle version of the Bible but reading it on my iPhone and noticed it didn’t have a highlight option like the Kindle does.  Come on Amazon, at least allow the copy/paste function that the new iPhone 3.0 software allows!

3) Amazon iPhone app - I’ve got multiple issues with this app (not to be confused with the Kindle reader iPhone app) but I’ll keep it fairly short .  A) No tie-in to Kindle app at all.  B) No filtered version of Kindle only books  C) Can only add things to ‘wish list’ and not buy Kindle versions or even add samples (duh!).

4) Customer Reviews via Kindle - Although I have purchased 25 items thus far I only keep what I’m reading or about to read on it.  So I remove stuff fairly often.  Amazon is dropping the ball from the community aspect here.  The Kindle has a keyboard so why not on deletion give me the opportunity (like the iPhone does) to quickly rate the book and even put a review if I desired.  I post reviews if I had that feature and it can only help Amazon in the process.

5) Desktop client - This seems like a no brainer for me.  People thought they wouldn’t listen to music on their computers (that turned out to be wrong), then they said nobody would watch video (wrong again!), so why not allow a simple desktop client for Kindle versions as well? If not a desktop client, let me at least access it from a browser.

Again, I love my Kindle but my experience could always be better and as they keep pushing towards their goal of every book produced to be available on the Kindle, these things will only help in making a great user experience.

P.S. I’m quite happy that I was able to do both the picture and the audio file and get it on my blog without needing a computer at all, all my phone!

Canon Rebel T1i (500D) Review

We had a Canon before (XTi). Love that one. Got this per some friends suggestions (mainly cause it does solid 720p HD video). Gives us the ability to do stuff like this below with one camera. Beautiful.

My Config

For those of you that understand this, great and enjoy. For those of you who don’t, no worries, its not that important anyway. Just felt that this is a place that talks about things that has happened in my life and what this config enables me to do took up a lot of time a decade ago. Virtual high five to first comment that guesses what game this is from. :)

Life Experiences - My new car

This is a vanity private post. Thought about posting up pics publicly of my new car but Jenny convinced me otherwise.

I GOT A NEW CAR! I have been considering getting rid of my 03 Dodge Ram truck for a while now but since it hit the 100K mark I was ready for something new. I knew I wanted something more car like instead of a truck because the functionality of a truck was only getting used maybe two or three times a year really. So I went luxury vehicle and got a 2006 Infiniti M35 from Carmax.

Tangent: The Carmax experience was really pretty good. They gave me $5K for my truck (which was lower than I could’ve sold it for privately but considering the hail damage work I would’ve had to do AND the bad economy we are in, the stress would’ve outweighed the additional money I would’ve gotten. Their ‘no haggle’ concept is great and I went into one knowing what I wanted to look at and we didn’t beat around the bush. The car ended up costing $25,998 and was going to finance through Carmax (at 7.75%) but made a call to Employees Credit Union where I financed my truck and they gave me a %5.5 (gotta love the CUs) so I switched to them. This is a first for me but I also got the ‘gap insurance’ and extended warranty through the CU as well (it was cheaper too) so we’ll see if it is like Dad says, “Those are about as good as the paper they’re written on.” To be continued.

Had it a week now and I really love it. It feels good to ride and really nice interior. Has cool features like bluetooth speakersphone for my iPhone 3G and a 6 disc CD changer which I figured I wouldn’t really use but once I heard the difference between the FM wireless transmitter I have and a CD with that Bose system, I was sold. So the CD player plays MP3 CD and so I’m setting up some CD’s to just stay in the car that will pretty much cover my entire library of songs.

Now, Jenny and I are ready to take it out on the town together since it isn’t a family car (no carseats in it……..yet)

Here’s some pics I took a couple days after I got it.

Is Twitter the new American Online?

This shows how geeky I am, I suppose, but I enjoy finding past technological innovations to be able to make analogies to current ones. In communication terms, Twitter (or more likely “short-form communications”) looks to be playing out to be a new form of email. Many people that heard about email a couple decades ago couldn’t see the point. “Why wouldn’t I just call them or leave a message?”, they said. Now email is mission critical in just about every organization. Email didn’t start an upward trend until American Online came out and gave every consumer an email address with their service. And I still remember as a kid being excited about dialing in (2400 baud modem baby!) and hoping to hear those three company defining words, “You’ve got mail!”. YES, somebody emailed me!

So fast forward to 2009 and we have Twitter.

It’s been out for a few years but it really hasn’t taken off until now. One of the key differences that I see between AOL of old and Twitter of today is that AOL’s email was interoperable . AOL emails worked with Prodigy emails or CompuServe emails. What does Twitter work with today? Email was built with a decentralized network in mind but Twitter doesn’t appear to want to play nice. Considering their exponential growth why would they want to though, right? It’s a lot like Facebook in that way I suppose.

Twitter may end up, if not acquired first, to be the new AOL and is definitely put itself on the map for future technology historians.

It’s about Linked Information Next

Anytime I need a place for some inspiration, motivation, or creative thought I find myself over on TED.com. The TED conference is one of those conferences that I would LOVE to attend some day and aspire to be a presenter there (crossing fingers). I came across this presentation by Tim Berners-Lee (father of the Web) talking about what’s next. This presentation came just this past March in 2009. A really wonderful talk and I couldn’t agree with him more on putting your data (or I like to think of it as information) on the Web to be able to unlock other potentials that some of us haven’t even dreamed of before.
